- Read a book about the pioneers, just a few examples:
- Explore The Trek West, a church history web tour. Read the personal journals of the pioneers.
These sections are about the handcart companies:
- Read some of these pioneer stories collected by the Lone Mountain Stake in Las Vegas
- Watch Sweetwater Rescue, a BYU-TV documentary about the stranded handcart companies
- Research the name of the handcart pioneer you will be walking for on Trek, then present to your family or class / quorum:
- Use Google
- Search the church's pioneer database, look for company names, dates, and journal entries
- Find out if your ancestors were pioneers:
- Find your family tree
- Look for ancestors who were alive from 1847 - 1868, the migration years before trains took over
Another clue: they died in the West, but were born somewhere else - Enter all of these names in the church's pioneer database, find out if and when they crossed the plains
